A trader or investor cannot retire in the United States on the E-1 or E-2 visa. The E-1 and E-2 visas are work visas, specifically intended for those who are coming to the U.S. to “solely carry on substantial trade” or “solely to develop and direct the operations of the enterprise.” This requires a “hands on” approach with involvement on a daily basis for the E-1 or E-2 visa applicant. Eligibility for the E-1 or E-2 visa ceases when you no longer meet these requirements.
